| Deep Root Watering |
All trees need a consistent supply of water. Without consistent water a tree's ability to fight attacks from insects and disease declines substantially. It is especially important for trees to receive water during dry periods to replace water lost through their canopies. Although some trees will not show the effects of drought for 3-7 years it is imperative that they are properly cared for throughout the year. Healthy trees have 80-90% of their roots in the top 4-10 inches of soil. These are the hair-fine roots that are responsible for air, water, and nutrient intake. Sprinklers irrigate shallow rooted turf and do not provide adequate watering for deeper tree roots. "Deep root watering" is a process that involves inserting a water needle into the ground at 4-8 inches. It is then left for 10-15 seconds pumping water and then moved to the next location. Each tree, depending on its size will receive 4-10 of these per watering. Deep root watering serves multiple purposes. First, it provides water directly to the roots at deeper depths, and second, it softens the soil encouraging roots to grow and develop. |
